Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery in Greece
General information
Traveling abroad for medical services is becoming more and more popular, especially for treatments that are considered voluntary and are not covered by the national health systems' funding or private medical insurances.
During the past years, more and more people choose to travel abroad for Plastic Surgery, since these procedures can be extremely expensive in their countries.
Plastic Surgery in Greece
Greece is already a favorite overseas destination for plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery, especially for Europeans, but also for citizens of U.S.A., North America and Middle East.
There are many reasons that make Greece a preferred destination for plastic surgery starting from the large network and the reputation of plastic / cosmetic surgeons. They are very experienced since most of them have been trained in Europe and / or USA and provide their services with professionalism and at exceptionally competitive prices.
Another reason is the modern hospitals and clinics that set high standards in equipment and accommodation offering a secure and pleasant environment, respecting the privacy of the patients.
Finally, the natural beauties of Greece, its cultural heritage and the accommodation infrastructure can help you relax and combine your treatment with pleasant activities.
Operation of Private Practices
The vast majority of plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons in Greece have a private practice where consultations and some non-surgical cosmetic procedures take place, but the operations are being performed in big, fully equipped private hospitals or clinics. It is most likely that the first appointment will be done at the plastic surgeon's private practice, in order to meet you in person, discuss about the procedure and the improvements it will provide and answer any of your questions.
Surgeons' Accreditations
Plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery in Greece is strictly controlled and therefore surgeons are highly qualified, having many years of training and experience. After six years of university studies and four years of practice, the doctors go through six years of further training and practice in order to obtain their plastic surgeon expertise. Finally, in order to be licensed by the Greek state, they need to pass examinations.
When seeking for the surgeon to treat you, always bear in mind whether the surgeon is accredited or member of international medical societies. The most common are:
International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons (IPRAS): IPRAS has
grown steadily over the past half century and now is proud of the 91 member countries, representing almost 14,000 plastic surgeons. The purpose of IPRAS is to promote the art and science of plastic surgery, to further plastic surgery education and research, and to encourage friendship among plastic surgeons and physicians of all countries. The basic driving concept behind the establishment of IPRAS was to ensure that plastic surgery quality was established around the world.
American Society of Plastic Surgeons / ASPS: is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in
the world, composed of more than 7,000 physician members. Its mission is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery. The Society is a strong advocate for patient safety and requires its members to operate in accredited surgical facilities that have passed rigorous external review of equipment and staffing.
European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS): Its purpose is to create a body of duly qualified
surgeons who have had training and experience in plastic and/or reconstructive surgery of the face and neck. Its objectives are to stimulate study, research and scientific advancement in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery between all the specialties that have common interests. The Academy is mainly for surgeons in Europe, although it does have some interested members from outside Europe. Τhe Academy has been involved in the European Community in identifying facial plastic surgery as an entity and is active in promoting appropriate training schemes for trainees in the subspecialty of facial plastic surgery.
Hellenic Society of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery / HE.S.P.R.A.S: is a nonprofit
Scientific Association that represents the majority of plastic surgeons in Greece. Its main object is the promotion of the expertise through the dissemination and strengthening of research, organizing all kinds of scientific events (conferences, etc.), cooperation with other scientific societies in Greece and abroad, monitoring and adherence to laws and regulations relating to the duties and rights of Plastic Surgeons and general participation in all scientific issues.
Operation of Clinics and Certification
The surgery itself should take place in the hospital / clinic, as it is a safe, sterile environment where any possible complication can be dealt. In Greece, the hospitals follow international healthcare standards and are certificated or accredited by ISO, JCI or Temos.
JCI (Joint Commission International): The JCI standards provide meaningful metrics to improve the quality and patient safety in all clinical and managerial functions of acute care hospitals, as well as embrace continuous performance improvement.
Temos: The aim of this certification program is to validate and optimize the hospital's medical and non-clinical services for medical tourists including the complete patients' care cycle before travelling abroad, within the hospital and for the post-treatment and post-discharge procedures including the follow-up.
